Stumbling around the FOB

FOB Sweeney is a small FOB in the Shinkay District of Zabul. To clarify, area-wise, it is fairly large given the population. There is plenty of room for everyone and everything, so it isn’t crowded at all. There is a nice road that circles the inside of the perimeter of the HLZ/motor pool. It is about 1K around, making a decent running loop. It is a welcome change from the monotony of the treadmill/elliptical.

Another nice thing about Sweeney is it is green around here. Not green like home or even as green as Mizan, but there is plenty of green all around. In fact there are trees on the FOB! The ISAF side has a few; the ANA side has many more. It is very nice to see the vegetation and to be able to touch a tree. I will include pictures of our trees when I post pictures of the flowers

The base is named in honor of SSG Paul Sweeney, a young Soldier that was killed near here in 2003. The memorial near the HLZ also recognizes four others killed about 6 months after SSG Sweeney. I think it is important to have the memorial markers of the Soldiers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Of course it would be better to not need them…

Thanks for reading…

I hope you know that many of us appreciate the sacrifices made by your colleagues. You are all in my prayers.

Dan, it’s kind of sad that when you look at the “grove” on Sweeny you see “many trees”. It looks like the ANA side of Sweeny has about as many trees as North Dakota does. Remember, there are places where trees grow just a few feet from each other and cover millions of acres. On the other hand – sometimes it’s nice to have an unobstructed view.
