I know I promised to talk about FOB Mescall today, but I stayed pretty busy and the thoughts of writing a substantive blog post were overcome by events. Maybe tomorrow…
FOB Mescall does have a fairly large population of FOB dogs. Here is a link (thestubbythumb) to a very good blog about some Afghan dogs. Like most dogs, they are super friendly and love any and all attention. Here are a few pictures of some of them who followed me around Mescall hoping to get a little affection.
Thanks for looking.

Whenever I see an email from your blog, I always know there’s going to be something great to see. As always, amazing photos!
Thank you for looking!
Great images, again 🙂
Thanks!
LOVE the pups…awesome creatures! Thanks!
They are good dogs! Thanks for looking.
so cute!
Such beautiful animals… Thanks for sharing them!
I am glad you like them.
Such love in those eyes. Love those pics.
yes, dogs are pretty awesome
When you’re so far from home, it’s good to know that love can come to you in unexpected ways… You can tell by your pics, these are super great dogs! Thanks for sharing them… they probably don’t know, but now they are famous and immortal dogs!
thanks, I think dogs are the most forgiving and loving little creatures out there, two or four legged…
Great photos, especially their faces. I have a terrilbe time photographing our dogs…they always seem to get camera shy.
Do you have the opportunity to take pics of any Military Working Dogs? That would be a wonderful post subject 🙂
we have some at Apache. Next time I spend time there I will look into it. Thanks!
Cute especially the yellow lab looking one. They just walk around the FOB? Who do they belong to? Hard not to get attached or miss your own critters.
they are wild dogs that belong to no one. They are not suppose to be allowed and are usually put down on the US run and the larger bases, but on the smaller FOBs that rule is often overlooked
Wild dogs………they don’t look wild..well at least the lab cross one doesn’t….are these the same kind of dogs that some of the troops try to send home? And how do they get on the post?
yes they are. They come though the gates…the guards let them in
Oh Dan, how I love these pooch photos. I so hope they are well cared for. My friend who runs UAA always tells me such horrible tales that I always wonder about their welfare. I bet you and your buddies all feed and pet them but what happens when you go? Those eyes jump right off your page I can see your humanity reflected in them.
It’s a difficult situation because they are not suppose to be allowed to stay on base and the Soldiers are not suppose to feed them. In fact they will be put down when the rule is enforced. For most of us it is difficult because there seem to be more ‘dog’ people than not & often the non-dog people end up converting – like the stuuby thumb wrote in her post (thestubbythumb.com/dog-tor-strangelove-or-how-i-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-love-the-dogs/)
That’s very upsetting that healthy animals will be euthanized. Same here in the states. It’s very wrong Dan.
yes, it is sad. Like most dogs, they just want someone to love them
I’m weeping.
😦
Wow, these are such beautiful dogs, thanks for telling us about them, Dan. I didn’t know that there might be dogs on your bases – it must be heart-breaking to put them down, when people have already bonded with them. They have such gorgeous eyes… I would want to go and pet them all!
we do not have any at Apache and only one at Al Masaak.
Hey, this dog business is on my mind. When you ship out, can you adopt one? Is there some kind of international ‘no doggie’ rule I’m unacquainted with? If you all took one then they wouldn’t be put down. I’m so upset over this.
That would be nice, but it is a long & expensive process made even more difficult by the fact we are actually prohibited from caring for them on the FOB. It is against the rules to feed them. Rabies and other disease ar fairly widespread, so the prohibition is understandable, but tough to follow for those that love dogs.
Very disappointing news indeed.
Did you see the info on The Puppy Rescue Mission? Despite the expense & risks there is ongoing efforts to help the dogs.
That makes me feel better. Thank you.
